Violet woke slowly but fuzzy edges framed the ceiling above her. She scratched her nose and rubbed her eyes. She frowned at the ache radiating from her shoulders and down her back. She heard a snuffle. The day and evening before crashed back on her.

She rolled on to her side to see Mason still sleeping. His face slack, his lips parted and his breath sounding in tiny puffs and she saw the man she lived with in college. The years faded as he rested beside her.

She didn’t know when he released her arms or covered them with just a sheet. She must have fallen asleep quickly after all the beer and the sex. Some dizziness remained along with an annoying thumping headache and Violet knew she was still slightly drunk. She needed water and some Tylenol.

Pushing the sheet back, she sat up and put her feet on the floor. She checked the clock to find midnight had just past. She stood up slowly, trying not to jostle the bed or her skull.

She glanced back at Mason who hadn’t moved then padded to her closet. She pulled a black cover from the hanger. It was lacy and silk. It only hung to about mid-thigh.

Violet stopped one more time to check on Mason, smiling when he batted at his nose but didn’t wake. He always was a sound sleeper. She liked the way his grown up lines disappeared when he was so relaxed.

She made her way down the hall and to the kitchen. She bypassed the pretty pitcher of cold water inside the refrigerator and took two bottles out of the cupboard. She drained one quickly then opened the second one. She opened the painkillers and washed down two pills. Room temperature water was easier to gulp and she needed to replace some fluids as well as get some fresh oxygen into her blood.

Violet felt like her chest was constricting when her eyes fell on a small, metal flower sitting atop the microwave. It was a tiny piece of sculpture that Damon purchased at an outdoor art festival. He had noticed her interest in it and bought it on the sly. When they stopped for lunch he set it in front of her and she’d been amazed at his sweetness.

Her eyes burned as she thought of Damon. Violet never expected to have sex with anyone but him.

She lifted her remaining bottle of water and drank that down, fighting against the lump in her throat. The soothing feel of the liquid helped calm her down. Violet reminded herself that she wasn’t betraying him. Damon dumped her. He made his decision and she was allowed to find someone else, even it was just someone to help her through the transition from engaged to single.

Mason peered at her from the around the pantry wall. He scratched at his bare chest. He had put his boxer briefs back on but nothing else. Violet smiled at him, surprised that it didn’t feel forced. She was glad to see him.
